Marilyn Spencer

Marilyn Joan Spencer, age 87, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 8:28 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling.

She was born March 29, 1931 in Bath, Illinois the daughter of Maurice Thomas and Pauline Lefferta Briggs Root.  She married Robert J. Behrends on June 6, 1949 in Palmyra, Missouri and he preceded her in death in December of 1970.  She later married Mark Otis Spencer on August 14, 1971 at the Plymouth Baptist Church in Springfield, Illinois and he preceded her in death on March 23, 2007.

Mrs. Spencer was a homemaker and had also worked as a nurse’s aide. 

She attended San Jose, Illinois grade school and graduated from Mt. Sterling High School with the class of 1949.

Mrs. Spencer was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Sterling.  Marilyn always enjoyed studying history and collecting antiques.

Survivors include 4 children Barbara Christner of Timewell, Illinois, Robert Behrends of Mt. Sterling, Tony Behrends of Mt. Sterling and Nancy Steinecke of Houston, Texas.  3 step children Steven Earl Spencer of Odessa, Texas, Patricia Ann Spencer-Yates of Rushville, Illinois and Susan Jane Trone of Shalimar, Florida.  1 brother Roberts Weldon Root of Keokuk, Iowa.  1 sister Carol Maureen Carter of Quincy, Illinois.  Several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 step son Robert Paul Spencer and 1 brother Maurice Richard Root.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Aaron Foster officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Mt. Sterling or the American Diabetes Association.
