Betty Jacobs Gabriel, age 92, formerly of Galesburg, Illinois, went home to be with her Lord and family at 7:20 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2019 at Lavender Ridge Memory Care in Jacksonville, Illinois, where she resided. Betty was born March 6, 1926 in Timewell, Illinois the daughter of Elmer E. and Nellie Hendricks Perry. She married Stanley M. Jacobs on April 12, 1947 in Peoria, Illinois and he preceded her in death. On October 8, 1991, she married Charles E. Gabriel, and he also preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Robert and James Perry and a sister Marilyn Herren.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan (Rich) Hohmann of Jacksonville, Illinois and Becky Leafgreen of Galesburg, Illinois. Two grandchildren Sarah (Monty) Lee of New York, New York and Eric Hohmann of Jacksonville, Illinois. Two great grandchildren Evelyn and Isaac Lee both of New York also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
Betty attended grade school in Timewell and graduated high school in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. From there, she continued her education in Chicago. She also attended classes at SIU, Carl Sandburg College and Bradley University in Peoria. Betty owned and operated a number of successful beauty shops in Galesburg and the surrounding area for many years. She later became a Realtor with Century 21 in Galesburg where she was recognized for continued high sales in her successful career.
Over the years, Betty had been a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg, Illinois, Pilot Club, Garden Club and American Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed her time with the Sweet Adeline’s, and was an avid animal lover, which dated back to her years growing up on the farm. Betty became very involved in the Galesburg Humane Society and went with state representatives to shut down several puppy mills.
There will be private family services, with burial in the Mounds Cemetery near Timewell, Illinois.
