John Saxer

John Henry Saxer, age 82, of Versailles, Illinois passed away at 4:20 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born March 21, 1936 in Pike County, Illinois the son of Roy F. and Martha Louella Stuller Saxer.  He married Viola Ann Vandeventer on January 15, 1955 and she preceded him in death on June 30, 1963.  He then married Karen Louise Wagner on July 26, 1964 in the Timewell Baptist Church and she survives.

Mr. Saxer was a farmer and was also a self-employed homebuilder, having built many homes in the area. 

He attended Washington School in Brown County and graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1953.

Mr. Saxer was a member of the First Christian Church of Jacksonville, Illinois. 

John served on the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation Board for 18 years and was also a member of both the Illinois and National Soil and Water Conservation Associations.  He was also a member of the Brown County Farm Bureau and earlier in life was a member of 4-H.    John always enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his friends, but his greatest joy was attending his grandchildren’s many activities.

Survivors include his wife Karen Saxer of Versailles, Illinois.  3 children Rachel Ann Saxer of Mt. Sterling, Virginia Louise “Ginnie” Anderson (Jerry) of Knoxville, Illinois and Joseph Henry Saxer (Patti) of Jacksonville, Illinois.  6 grandchildren Darci Samuel (Ron), Wesley Anderson, Cassi Ruyle, Cydny Saxer, Carmyn Saxer and Raymond Anderson (Wendy).  5 great grandchildren Dominik and Vincent Samuel and Savana, Kylei and Erik Anderson.  2 nephews Leroy Kasch (Susan) and Ed Wagner also survive along with his beloved dog Rex.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Viola Elizabeth Saxer in infancy and Vera Louella Kasch and a niece Martha Louella Kasch.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with J. Cook officiating.

Burial will be in the Versailles West Side Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Versailles Fire Department or the Versailles Fall Festival.
