Michael Wayne “Mike” “Moose” Burnett, age 68, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away 1:26 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at his residence.

He was born March 26, 1949 in Beardstown, Illinois the son of Lozelle Dale and Julia Belle Dimmick Burnett.  He married Ruth Ann “Ruthie” Barclift September 14, 1968 in Palmyra, Missouri and she survives.

Mike was a truck driver for several years, retiring from George Keller & Sons in Quincy, Illinois.  He was also engaged in farming most of his life. 

Mike graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1967.

He was a devoted member of the Versailles Christian Church having served the church in many capacities including serving as a board member and elder. 

Mike loved the time he spent with his family especially his grandchildren.  He was known as someone with a big heart who had a smile for everyone.

Survivors include his wife Ruthie Burnett of Mt. Sterling.  4 children Shelly Lerch (Perry) of Jenison, Michigan, Mindy Engel of Augusta, Illinois, Matt Burnett (Sarah) of Mt. Sterling and Luke Burnett (Maggie) of Mt. Sterling.  15 grandchildren Tiffany Engel (Chris Akers), Skylar O’Neal (Gus), Brandee Chockley, Mikie Engel, Johnnie Engel, Rachel Lerch, Holton Burnett, Sam Lerch, Rubie Burnett, Lily Kerker, Kya Burnett, Roran Burnett, Brooklyn Burnett, Trayce Burnett and Rynn Burnett.  7 great grandchildren Aiden, Carter, Lilah, Ryder, Jason, Jaxxynn and Dean.  1 brother David Burnett (Wanda) of Jay Oklahoma.  1 sister Deborah Overmyer (Michael) of Culver, Indiana.  1 sister-in-law Carol Cox.  Lifelong friends Merle and Martha Sieben also survive along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 grandsons Lance and Levi Burnett-Claassen and Gabriel Burnett.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Versailles Christian Church with Pastor Matt Haberman officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling. 

Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and private burial will be held at a later date in the Ripley Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Versailles Christian Church or the Ripley Cemetery.
