Duane L. “Pete” Lane, age 85 of Mt. Sterling, passed away at 3:58 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 surrounded by family.
Pete was born March 7, 1933 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Leonard and Dorothy Katherine Mock Lane. He married Zelma Bowen on July 3, 1953 in New Albany, Indiana.
Pete owned and operated Lane’s Garage for several years.
He attended Quincy and Brown County schools.
Pete is a Korean War Era Veteran. He served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955.
Pete was a member of the Timewell Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374, the Timewell Lions Club and had served as Mayor of Timewell for several years. Pete enjoyed golfing, fishing camping, and had his own Country Western band for many years.
Survivors include his wife Zelma Lane of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; 2 children Julie Lane of Quincy, Illinois and Mark Lane (Dixie) of Macomb, Illinois; 5 grandchildren Jamie Traeder (Jason), Jared Busen (Shira), Justin Busen (Sarah), Megan Junk (Tyler) and Paige Lane; 4 great grandchildren Calvin and Silas Traeder, Ethan Junk and Duke Lane; 2 brothers L. W. Lane (Karan) of Burlington, Iowa and Jerry Lane (Bonnie) Carlinville, Illinois; 1 sister Sharon Likes of Camp Point, Illinois also survives along with a sister-in-law Eleanor Lane of Springfield, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother Donald “Shorty” Lane and 1 brother-in-law Donald Likes.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the Timewell Baptist Church.
Burial will follow at the Mounds Cemetery near Timewell. A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling. Friends may also call one hour prior to services on Thursday at the Timewell Baptist Church.
Memorials are suggested to the Timewell Baptist Church or the Great River Honor Flight.
