Anthony Lee “Tony” Markert, age 77, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 2:29 a.m. Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
He was born December 16, 1940 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Harold A. and Juanita Wave Foote Markert. He married Susan Cox on November 30, 1963 and to this union four children Todd, Chad, Kara and Kurt were born.
Tony was a lifelong Brown County Farmer.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Mt. Sterling with the class of 1959 and had served in the National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Tony was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1281.
He always enjoyed working on the farm and loved spending time with his family and friends, especially the time he spent with his grandchildren.
Survivors include four children Todd Markert and Chad Markert (wife Melissa) all of Mt. Sterling, Kara Markert-Nagle (husband David) of Morrisonville, Illinois and Kurt Markert of Springfield, Illinois. 5 grandchildren Vanessa, Mariah, Claire, Ashlee and Bradley Markert. 2 sisters Rebecca Wilson (husband Roger) of Jacksonville, Illinois and Sarah Wessels (husband Thom) of Elmwood, Illinois. 1 brother Terrance “Ted” Markert (wife Norma) of Macomb, Illinois. 1 sister-in-law Charlotte Markert of Mt. Sterling also survives along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother Jeff Markert.
A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2018 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Father Steve Thompson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorials be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church or St. Mary’s School.
