William Alvin “Steve” Perry, age 96, of Timewell, Illinois passed away at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
He was born January 24, 1922 in Pea Ridge Township in Brown County, Illinois the son of Alvin C. and Nona V. Davis Perry. He married Betty Vance on February 19, 1954 at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Sterling and she survives.
Mr. Perry owned and operated W. A. Perry & Son Elevator in Timewell, Illinois for several years. He was also the first one to sell and service RCA and Whirlpool appliances in the area, starting in 1949. Earlier in life Mr. Perry had worked in the banking industry.
He attended Timewell Schools and graduated from Mt. Sterling High School with the class of 1940. He then graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy with a degree in accounting.
Mr. Perry was a veteran of World War II having served he country in the United States Army, where he specialized in short wave radio operation.
He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Timewell, where he served his church in many capacities including Deacon, Trustee and Treasurer for several years.
Mr. Perry was also a longtime member of the former Timewell American Legion Post # 1059 and was a current member of the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post # 374. He was known as an excellent musician having the ability to play the piano, guitar and harmonica. He also enjoyed exercising and would walk 5 to 7 miles everyday.
Survivors include his wife Betty Perry of Timewell. 4 children Paula Hannant (John) of Timewell, Belinda Hovan (Michael) of Alsip, Stephen Perry (Sherry) of Timewell and Nancy Perry (Dr. Michael Gadson) of Mt. Sterling. 1 brother Verlin Perry of Mt. Sterling. 7 grandchildren Leslie Easley (Kelly), Jenny Koch (Karey), Stephen Perry (Alison), Alana Hannant, Lindsey Opyd (Mike), Elizabeth Binnendyk (Mark) and Melissa Perry. 7 great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation will be accorded and a Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Timewell with Rev. Dale Gadberry officiating.
Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Mounds Cemetery near Timewell. A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Mt. Sterling American Legion Post #374 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.
There will be no visitation.
