Barbara Joan Lucas Greene, age 85, of Marion, Iowa and formerly of Illinois passed away at 1:18 p.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Barbara Joan Lucas Greene was born March 31, 1938 in Schuyler County, Illinois to Margaret L. Abbott Lucas and Theodore D. Lucas of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. They preceded her in death.
Barbara was also preceded in death by her husband Wilbur L. Rigg, 1 son Michael S. Rigg and 1 brother Robert E. Lucas.
She was married in 1955 to Wilbur L. Rigg and he preceded her in death in 1959 due to accidental death. She married Robert B. Harris in 1961, and married Walter Ben Greene in 1994. They both preceded her in death.
Her surviving children are Jeffrey L. Rigg of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, Laura J. Thomas of Astoria, Illinois, Theodore D. Rigg (Lois) of Temple, Texas, Dierdre L. Harris of Dunfermline , Illinois and Nancy Harris of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her stepson Anthony A. Greene of Peoria, Illinois. Two brothers John A. Lucas (Ellen) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and George Lucas (Helen) of Rushville, Illinois. One sister Dorothy K. Lambert of Hartford City, Indiana also survives along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Barbara was employed by the Illinois Department of Public Health for 10 years as a microfilming operator. She was also employed by the State of Illinois Department of Mental Health and Disabilities in Springfield, Illinois and the State of Illinois Department of Human Services in Peoria, Illinois. From 1988, she proudly worked as a registered nurse until retiring in 2004.
Barbara was a graduate of Springfield Adult Education Center through Brown County High School in 1967. She then attended Spoon River College and was the recipient of the Marguarita Award given by the Altrusa Club at her LPN graduation. She was also a graduate of St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing in Peoria, Illinois in 1985 and then attended Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois.
With her deep love of God, it was so appropriate that she passed away immediately after saying The Lord’s Prayer with her daughter Nancy. We think this was God’s way of letting us know she’s in Heaven!
Cremation has been accorded and burial of the cremated remains will be in the Hersman Cemetery and a private family remembrance celebration will be held at a later date.
