Dorothy Surratt Age 85 of Mt. Sterling, Illinois (Formerly of Concord, Illinois) passed
away at 5:00am Wednesday August 3, 2022 at Sunset Home in Quincy, Illinois.
Dorothy was born April 16, 1937, in Petersburg, Illinois at home. She was the
daughter of Samuel W. Bennett and Bessie Marie Robinson Olson Bennett. She
married Sherwood Spears Surratt June 30, 1956, at the Concord Christian Church in
Concord, Illinois. He preceded her in death January 2, 2021
She is survived by her Son Steven Alan Surratt (wife Lisa Diane Surratt) of Mt.
Sterling, Grandson Aaron Troy Surratt (wife Kari Ann Surratt) of Urbana, Illinois and
three Great Grandchildren Emily Jean, Sarah Ann, & David Lee Surratt also of
Urbana. Sister Mary Matilda Starmann (husband Joe) Three Brothers- in- Law
Herschel (Bernice) Surratt of Chapin and Ted Surratt of Pittsfield, Robert Pahlmann
of Chapin, and Sister-in-Law Gladys Bennett of Modesto. Also with several Nieces
and Nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law William O. &
Elizabeth Surratt Sr., Grandson David William Surratt, one brother Thomas Bennett,
three sisters Phyllis Jean Pahlmann, Eileen Wessing and Wilma Brunkala and two
brothers- in- law William O. Surratt Jr. & Richard Surratt as well as three sisters-in-law, Melba Surratt, Betty Surratt, and Sandra Surratt.
She graduated from Chapin High School in 1955. And worked for Chapin High School and
Triopia Jr. & Sr. High School as a secretary for 32 years. One of her joys was typing
all the scripts for Ken Bradbury Plays and Programs. Dorothy was a member of the
Concord Christian Church where she headed up several fundraisers, taught Sunday
School and helped on the committee to set up meals for funerals in Concord.
Sherwood and Dorothy also enjoyed being Youth Group Leaders for several years.
She later attended First Christian Church in Mt. Sterling where her son is the Pastor.
Hobbies included camping, selling Watkins products and Two By Two Quartet
groupie, and reading. Dorothy loved spending time with her Grandsons Aaron and
David, then later the Great Grandchildren Emily, Sarah, & David. She was loved and
will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2022 in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arenzville with Rev. Matt Haberman and Wes Hendricker officiating.
Burial will follow in the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling and from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services on Sunday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arenzville.
