Harry Russell Manley, age 97, of Fishhook, Illinois passed away at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home Hammond Hall in Quincy, Illinois. 

 

He was born September 21, 1923 in Tulsa, Oklahoma the son of Cale and Lelah Lane Manley.  He married Mary Balzer on December 3, 1946 in Quincy, Illinois and she preceded him in death on June 5, 2017.  

Mr. Manley was a farmer and had also worked for Gardner-Denver in Quincy, Illinois for twenty-five years.  He graduated from Perry High School and Electric Arc Welding Defense School in Quincy, Illinois.  

Mr. Manley was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the United States Army with the 439th Military Police Escort Guard Company.  Harry was a member of the Perry American Legion Post # 1040 for 75 years, serving for many years as the Chaplain.  

Mr. Manley attended the Morrellville Community Church in Brown County and also volunteered for several years for the American Heart Association.  

Survivors include 3 sons Steve Manley (Helen), Rodney Manley (Judy) and Len Manley (Carolyn).  6 grandchildren Brenda Weitbrecht (Brian), John Manley (Janelle), Andrew Manley (Susanna), Jared Manley (Kirsten), Misty Amizich (Johnny) and Jessica Manley.  14 great grandchildren also survive along with 1 nephew Virgil McDowell, Jr. and 2 nieces Lois Houston and Barbara Reese.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Cora Lane Manley, a brother in infancy, a sister Irene McDowell and 2 grandchildren in infancy Hannah and Luke Manley.  

We know that Harry deserves a beautiful tribute and understand that under normal circumstances many friends would love to attend.  But sadly due to the current health situation and under the direction of the local health department, the services are to be conducted with only immediate family members in attendance. 

Friends are encouraged to watch Harry’s services streaming live at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021 on the funeral home website at hendrickerfuneralhome.com.

Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery near Fishhook, Illinois.  A military service will be conducted at the graveside by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Perry American Legion Post # 1040. 

We also encourage the community to leave a condolence or remembrance on the website for the family.  

There will be no visitation. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions be made to the Gideons International and may be left at or mailed to the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, IL 62353 

The Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling is assisting the family with the arrangements.
