John Robert Colgan, age 79, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.
He was born June 28, 1944 in Cooperstown Township of Brown County, Illinois the son of Charles Edward and Dorothy Maxine Leezer Colgan. He married Linda Corinne McClelland on June 22, 1968 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling and she survives.
Earlier in life John worked on a drill rig crew which included working on some of the runways at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. He then worked construction with James Watt for a few years, followed by serving as plant manager at A. B. Chrisman Fertilizer Plant in Mt. Sterling. John then drove a bulk truck for Standard Oil delivering to several area farmers. After that he established John Colgan Bulldozing doing conservation work for many local farmers for over 20 years. During the off season from bulldozing, he also worked as a truck driver for Dot Foods in Mt. Sterling. John then retired from the State of Illinois DHS Buildings and Grounds Maintenance in Springfield after 20 years of service.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Academy with the class of 1962 and was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1965 until 1971.
He enjoyed woodworking and especially loved building furniture out of reclaimed barnwood. A huge source of pride for him was watching his grandchildren enjoy fishing in the ponds he’d built on his farm several years before they were born.
Survivors include his wife Linda Colgan of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. 2 children Stephen Eric Colgan of Opp, Alabama and Christine Anne Moore (Dan) of Quincy, Illinois. 4 grandchildren Jackson, Oliver, Samuel and Lilah Moore. 2 brothers Daniel Colgan (Rose) of Springville, Tennessee and Edward Colgan. 3 sisters Dorothy Keylor of Timewell, Illinois, Patricia Parker (David) of Versailles, Illinois and Mary Fiscus also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother Charles Raymond Colgan, 1 nephew David Norman Colgan, 1 brother-in- law Zane Keylor and 1 sister-in-law Jo Anne McClelland Harris.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2024 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mt. Sterling with Father Aaron Kuhn and Deacon Paul Koch officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling. A Rosary Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family Catholic Church Restoration Fund.
