Lyla Ashbaker

Lyla Jean Ashbaker, age 84, of Ripley, Illinois passed away at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Heritage Health, Therapy and Senior Care in Mt. Sterling.  

She was born October 18, 1936 in Ripley, Illinois the daughter of James Leo and Irma Helen Scherrer Hendricks.  She married Frederick Melvin Ashbaker on August 16, 1953 at the Mt. Sterling First Christian Church and he preceded her in death on March 7, 2015. 

Mrs. Ashbaker was a cashier for both the Rushville IGA and the Mt. Sterling IGA for several years.   

She attended Ripley Schools.  Lyla always enjoyed gardening, bird watching and she truly loved spoiling children, especially her grandchildren.  

Survivors include 1 daughter Cindy Eifert (Marc) of Macomb, Illinois.  3 grandchildren Melissa Mathis (Mike) of Rushville, Illinois, Josh Smith (Amanda) of Rushville, Illinois and Jake Smith (Holly) of Worden, Illinois.  9 great grandchildren Dusti Ingles (Zack), Eli, Jordan, Cylas, Remi and Tannar Irwin and Noah, Cassidy and Avery Smith.   2 sisters Darla Whaley (Bob) of Meadview, Arizona and Karolyn Hendricks of Mt. Sterling also survive along with several nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers Harlan Edward Hendricks and David Eugene Hendricks and 2 sisters Rosemary Aldrich and Shirley Mathewson Mohlenbruck.  

Cremation will be accorded and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021 in the Hendricker Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Haberman officiating. 

Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Ripley Cemetery. 

There will be no visitation. 

Memorials are suggested to the Ripley Cemetery.
