Mary Petri

Mary Etta Petri, age 85, a resident of Heritage Health in Jacksonville, Illinois and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, passed away at 6:43 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.

She was born January 13, 1936 in Morgan County, Illinois the daughter of Harry F. and Millie S. Middendorf Werries.  She married Allen H. Petri on October 4, 1957 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Chapin, Illinois and he preceded her in death on January 9, 2010.  

Mrs. Petri worked as a secretary for both the Webber Insurance Agency and the Willis Insurance Agency in Mt. Sterling.  She graduated from Chapin High School as valedictorian of the class of 1954.  

Mrs. Petri was a devoted member of the First Lutheran Church of Mt. Sterling, where she served as financial secretary for several years.  Mary was baptised in 1936 and confirmed in 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Chapin, Illinois.  She also served as president of the Brown County Senior Council Board for several years and was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.  Mary always enjoyed playing bingo and all kinds of card games.  

Survivors include 1 brother Alvin Werries of Quincy, Illinois.  2 sisters Maxine Lovekamp of Winchester, Illinois and Leona Massey of Jacksonville, Illinois also survive along with several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers Charles, Raymond and James Werries and 1 sister Margaret Rebbe. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2021 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Pastor Andrew Dierks officiating.  

Burial will follow in the Versailles West Side Cemetery. 

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church of Mt. Sterling.
