Max Brierton Obituary

Max Earl Brierton, age 84, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Illinois.  

He was born May 14, 1938 in Brown County, Illinois the son of Henry Hoelscher Brierton and May Dehart Brierton.  He married Anna B. “Annie” Norton on September 11, 1960 at the Methodist Church in Quincy, Illinois and she preceded him in death on January 29, 2022. 

Max was a self-employed carpenter and was also engaged in farming.  He graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1956.  

Mr. Brierton served his country in the United States Army Reserves, where he was designated a sharpshooter. 

Max was a charter member of the Brown County Booster Club and also served on the Brown County Hornets “Chain Gang” for many years.  He always enjoyed woodworking, fishing and playing cards with the couples, but his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. 

Survivors include two children Michael Brierton (Lisa) of Mt. Sterling, Illinois and Michelle Babb (Mark) of Jacksonville, Illinois.  Three grandchildren Kaytlyn Wilson (David) of Des Moines, Iowa, Caleb Babb of Jacksonville, Illinois and Zacary Brierton of Mt. Sterling, Illinois.  1 great granddaughter, Ryder Wilson.  2 sisters-in-law Marilyn Brierton of Mt. Sterling and Pat Joslin of Chesterfield, Missouri also survive along with several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Niles Brierton. 

Cremation has been accorded and a graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2023 in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery.  

There will be no visitation. 

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or Brown County Against Cancer and may be mailed to or left at the Hendricker Funeral Home, 406 South Capitol Avenue, Mt. Sterling, Illinois 62353.
