Michael Lee Metzger, age 62, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 8:20 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2020 at his residence.
He was born March 29, 1958 in Quincy, Illinois the son of Raymond Joseph and Rebecca M. Ehrhardt Metzger. He married Pamela Hurst on June 9, 1990 and she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters Leeann DeJaynes (Charlie) of Mt. Sterling, Cheryl Newell (Mike) of Chapin, Illinois and Stephanie Monroe of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Six grandchildren Ryan and Jessica Newell of Chapin, Illinois, Joseph, Jasmine and Cooper Butler and David Monroe all of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. His father, Raymond Metzger of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Four sisters Jane Brown, Susan Stabler (Monte) all of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, Diane Van Hootegem (Ray) of Galesburg, Illinois and Pam Goudschaal (Doug) of Clayton, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive along with in-laws Pat Caldwell (Joe), David Fry (Becky) and Kim Eisenhower all of Jacksonville, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents, a brother-in-law Thomas Brown and one grandson Larry Michael Butler in infancy.
Growing up Mike helped his dad on the farm and worked at Behymer’s Trading Post for over 20 years. He also worked for Spradlin Mobile Homes and Gary Pruden Construction before starting his own business, Metzger Construction for 12 years. Mike graduated from Brown County High School with the class of 1976. He grew up in the Catholic faith and is a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Sterling. Mike was president of the Brown County Car Club, served as a board member of the Brown County Hunters Association, was on the Mt. Sterling Lake Committee, the Brown County Fall Festival committee and was a trustee for Cooperstown Township. He enjoyed playing the drums for the band Silver Spurs and Carefree Country and later with the Pea Ridge Hillbillies. He also enjoyed drag racing his 1965 Oldsmobile, going to Texas to boar hunt, taking the grandkids deer hunting, deer camp, fishing, camping and building furniture out of barn wood, but his greatest love was being with his family and his dog Bandit.
Cremation will be accorded and a graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2020 in the Cooperstown Cemetery with Troy Roberts officiating.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling.
Social distancing guidelines will be observed and there will be a limit of 50 visitors at any one time. With the current health concerns, non-physical expressions of condolence are suggested. Please consider refraining from hugs and handshakes, but know that your presence is greatly appreciated.
Memorials are suggested to Brown County Against Cancer, The Sting Squad, First Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling or the Brown County Hunters Association.
