Robert "Pete" Butler

Robert "Pete" Butler, 91, of rural Perry, passed away at his home August 3, 2022

with his wife and sons by his side. He was born March 27, 1931 in Perry, Illinois the son of Ross and Vera Smith Butler. He married Betty Jean Bernard in Bowling Green, Missouri on June 2, 1951 and she survives.

Pete worked hard from an early age as those of his generation did, working at

numerous occupations over the years, never finding anything that he couldn't do

well. He worked at various farm and construction jobs, was a top-notch apple

picker, worked as a meat cutter for the Perry locker and Bergman Meat Packing

Company in Pittsfield, as well as working in the timber industry and factory work,

retiring from Trinity Industries in Quincy but continuing to work part time in

construction and farm harvest into his 80's. Through the years he also made extra

money by shearing sheep, digging graves, and cleaning wells, cisterns and septic

tanks with his father and brother Fred. Pete was never without a job, always

providing for his family.

He enjoyed hunting and mushrooming, pitching horseshoes, shooting pool and

playing cards, and he had a love for dogs and horses. He loved his family and

always enjoyed family gatherings.

He is also survived by three sons Robert (Christine), Steven (Shirley) and Gary

(Janet) Butler, Ten grandchildren Rob (Mary) Butler, Angie Butler Daniels, Tawny

(Zach Francis) Butler, Donald (Kim) Goewey, Tonda Eisenburg, Terry (Erica)

Eisenburg, Dustin Butler, Justin (Kate) Harris, Jesse (Jodi) Butler and Tyler (Jenna) Butler. 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Jerry Butler, 1 great grandson, 2 brothers Fred and Larry Butler and 3 sisters Darlene Butler, Anne Lawber and Jane Lawber.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2022 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with his grandson Rob Butler officiating.

Burial will follow in the Jerry Butler Memorial Cemetery south of Mt. Sterling.  

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorials are suggested to the Detroit Christian Church or the American Heart Association.
