Ross Lozelle Dormire, age 97, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois passed away at 11:10 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.
He was born October 1, 1926 near Cooperstown, Illinois the son of Lester Brooke and Elsie Quinn Dormire. He married Bernice Berghaus on October 16, 1949 in Morgan County, Illinois and she preceded him in death on April 10, 1972. He then married Marie A. Henrick Davis on August 24, 1973 in Cooperstown, Illinois and she preceded him in death on October 25, 2004.
Mr. Dormire was a lifelong Brown County farmer who was still supervising the harvest of this year's crop. Ross loved raising sweet corn and especially enjoyed giving it away to family and friends.
He attended Fagan School and graduated from Mt. Sterling High School with the class of 1944.
Mr. Dormire was a member of the Cooperstown Christian Church and also attended Westside Christian Church in Springfield, Illinois and the Timewell Baptist Church.
Ross was a member of the Brown County Farm Bureau and was very proud of being named the 1966 soil conservation family of the year. He was a charter board member of the LaMoine Christian Service Camp and was an avid supporter of the St. Louis Christian College and Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch.
Survivors include five children Barbara Miller (Donald) of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, David Dormire (Rhonda) of Gulf Breeze, Florida, Dennis Dormire (Marcia) of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, Randy Dormire of Mt. Sterling, Illinois and Rick Dormire (Kim) of Clayton, Illinois. Eleven grandchildren John Miller (Sarah), Sondra Magee (Tommy), James Miller (Shantry), Kristen Peters (Kevin), Trisha Ely (Mike), Cy Dormire (Alexis), Chad Dormire (Jodi), Brooke Robinson (Kyle), Mitch Dormire (Maggie), Austin Dormire (Haley) and Jason Dormire. Fourteen great grandchildren Luke, Aaron, Colby (Brooke), Devin, Brendan, Andrew, Kendall, Brynnli, Bennett, Brielle, Ava, Millie, Izzy and Finley. One great great grandchild Cooper also survives along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Eugene Dormire, Robert Dormire and John Dormire, Sr. and two sisters Carol Roberts and Grace Dormire.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2023 in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Pastor Dale Gadberry officiating.
Burial will follow in the Cooperstown Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch or LaMoine Christian Service Camp.
